I'm a 30-something long-haired brunette. My gray hair has seen it all since my early 20s: permanent dyes, henna and lately semi-permanent colors. Pretty much everything but harsh bleaching. I want out of this vicious circle that is covering this ever expanding gray canopy!! Hopefully, I'll manage without caving :)

6 months photo update
I cannot believe how fast 6 months passed!
On January 15th 2013, I decided to stop dying my hair cold turkey. I haven't looked back since :)
As I was saying in my first post, my hair is long (about mid-back) and I do not want to take the relatively easy way out that is the pixie cut. I love my long hair and cannot see myself without it. But that makes for a fairly awkward growth phase that's very likely going to last a couple of years.
The changes are less drastic on a weekly basis now that I've passed the first few months. My grays are showing, without the shadow of a doubt. What's nice about long hair is that you can sort of camouflage the grays in an up-do or ponytail, or even by parting your hair differently. I myself seem to love flaunting them in everyone's face! ;)
Here are a few pictures of the past two months, mostly in day light. Feel free to leave me messages and questions!

15 weeks: photo-update
I just passed the 3 months mark a couple weeks ago. Three whole months dye-free. I can't say I'm unhappy about it...
As much as I would love to update you with a lot of new hair adventures, like a pixie or even a buzz cut, I have nothing exciting to report on... Everybody in my entourage knows I'm doing this, my roots are showing more than ever, and growth seems to have completely stalled (I know it's not true, but that's how it feels).
I'm also starting to notice a lot more single silver strands in the underlayer, and those are frizzy as heck!
ugh, I'm in a bit of a crappy mood today, I apologize :/ I leave you with a photo-update, and will touch base in a few weeks :)
Please leave comments and don't hesitate to ask me any question!

13 weeks, and going strong!
I just entered my 13th week dye-free! What an adventure it's been so far :)
For the most part, I feel very happy about it. I won't lie though, there have been a few emotional waves having a lot to do with accepting my overall more mature appearance.
Not that my skin has aged dramatically since January, but there's no mistake anymore that I am indeed in my thirties. It's such a strange feeling... My face definitely looks youthful; I take good care of it, maintain a fairly rigorous skin care routine, but every now and then I'll catch my reflection in a mirror, or a bus window, and I look... grown up. I think it has quite a strong effect on my morale, because of my lifestyle. Right now, I work in academia. Which basically means that I've been in school all my life. Now, I'm not a student anymore (thank goodness!), but I have virtually no pressure to dress any other way than extremely casual. Denims and sneakers are my bread and butter. I am surrounded by students all the time, and even though I know I am an adult, I still do not see myself as a grown up. Does that make any sense? Anyway, acceptance is key. I'll work on it...
On a more positive note: I LOVE my hair!
The silver strands are revealing themselves more and more steadily. The stripe is growing, thankfully in a very manageable fashion. I find that I am not nearly as gray as I thought when I was still dying. Of course, at that time, I could only see the white regrowth and honestly thought I was over 70% gray. Now that I actually stopped dying, I can see that most of my hair is still pigmented, except for a few patches that are slowly evolving into silver stripes, that frame my face very naturally. From afar, my grays really only look like natural highlights. Which I guess they are, when you think about it.
Overall, I'm happy about the whole thing.
I leave you with some pics from weeks 11-13.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention: my lashes are also fading... Has anyone got the same problem? I noticed that they are shrinking a bit, losing their curl and the tips appear completely white. Strange...

11 weeks since my last coloring: a photo-update
It's now been 11 weeks since my last coloring (which I guesstimated to be around January 15th of 2013), and pretty much everybody in my entourage now knows I'm going gray.
The positive response I'm getting from everyone is absolutely mind-blowing and even a little overwhelming. But in a good way!
Now, every single time I meet people, they do look at the top of my head still; not in this awkward embarrassed-for-me kinda way, but in a truly eager way to see progress and how my voyage into grayhairdom is evolving.
Some would say that I have now achieved a somewhat inelegant skunk-stripy state, but I beg to differ. Yes, I have about an inch and a half of gray roots, showing through a fairly contrasted warm dark chestnut canopy, but I have decided that it is not a problem at all. I embrace it! I even showcase it by purposefully parting my hair straight through the now completely white patch on the left side of my forehead. Might as well! I think it's best to take this in-your-face approach so that people don't imagine for one second I don't realize what's going on on top of my own head. This way, they know and don't have to wonder if I forgot to go to the hair dresser :)
I'm also starting to play with different hair styles that emphasize the color contrasts I have going on. To tell you the truth, I cannot wait for my white stripes to grow to full length!
This journey is turning into a lot of fun, which is something that even a couple of weeks ago I would not have thought possible :) I'm beginning to realize that even though my hair is graying, it is emphasizing the youthfulness of my face! Go figure...
Anyway, enough rambling! I leave you with a few pictures from the past two weeks :)
